At around 10 am this morning tsunami sirens located in Seward, Homer, Port Graham, Nanwalek and Seldovia were activated in error.

Office of Emergency Management Program Coordinator Dan Nelson said it was caused by some equipment being changed out at the Anchorage weather forecast office of the National Weather Service.

Nelson: “And inadvertently the live tsunami warning got sent out as opposed to the test code, so once that happened all of our systems including our siren system received that code and automatically activated, that’s the way it is supposed to work in case there is an earthquake or tsunami and the offices are not manned however this time around there was no tsunami threat.”

Homeland Security & Emergency Management also issued a statement saying the State Emergency Operations Center is assisting the KPB to transmit the all clear and the matter is under investigation.
