4:00 AM UPDATE – The National Weather Service in Anchorage reports that all tsunami alerts for the Alaska coastline have been canceled.
A Tsunami Warning was issued after a magnitude 8.2 earthquake occurred at 10:16 p.m. 75 miles southeast of Chignik in the Aleutians. The Tsunami Warning is in effect for the coastal areas of Alaska from Hinchinbrook Entrance Alaska, which is located 90 miles east of Seward, to Samalga Pass Alaska, which is located 30 miles southwest of Nikolski, which is located on Umnak Island in the Aleutians West Census Area.
Dan Nelson, Emergency Manager for the Kenai Peninsula Borough says that our immediate area is not in any danger:
“The warning applies only to areas near Kachemak Bay and Resurrection Bay near Homer and Seward. IT does not apply to other areas along Cook Inlet or the Central Kenai Peninsula. This includes the areas of Nikiski, Kenai, Soldotna, Sterling, Kasilof, Clam Gulch, Ninilchik, Anchor Point, Hope, and Moose Pass. These areas are not affected by the warning. It is not necessary to evacuate low lying areas in these locations.”

If you are located in this coastal area, move inland to higher ground.
The warning does not include residents on the Central Peninsula. Tsunami warnings mean that a tsunami with significant inundation is possible or is already occurring.
Tsunamis are a series of waves dangerous many hours after initial arrival time. The first wave may not be the largest.
