Two More Confirmed Cases Of COVID-19 In Alaska

A novel coronavirus, named Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), was identified as the cause of an outbreak of respiratory illness first detected in Wuhan, China in 2019. The illness caused by this virus has been named coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

Fairbanks Memorial Hospital held a press briefing on Monday night to confirm two older men in the Fairbanks area have tested positive for COVID-19.

 

The two men had been traveling in the Lower 48, according to Dr. Anne Zink, Alaska’s chief medical officer. The two positive test results came in Monday evening, according to Zink. She explained that both men had been traveling in the Lower 48 where community transmission was active, and had been out in the community of Fairbanks “for a period of time”.

 

Both individuals are currently stable and isolating at home, according to Dr. Anne Zink. She explained that their families and close contacts will be asked to be quarantined.

 

Alaska’s first confirmed COVID-19 case was reported by the state on Thursday.
