Drivers headed to Anchorage tonight could be caught in up to two construction closures.
Tonight and Thursday, July 30, the 9:30-10:30 pm closure south of Hope will coincide with another Seward Highway closure just south of Bird Creek.
Shannon McCarthy with the Department of Transportation detailed the Bird Creek project.
McCarthy: “Mile 99 to 100 improvements and it’s rehabilitating the pavement along that stretch of road and actually widening the highway for a passing lane for the northbound traffic.”
The one-hour closure near Hope will occur on Mondays through Thursdays through August 27 in order to allow construction crews to install a large pipe across the roadway.
McCarthy suggested drivers should give themselves an extra 30 minute to one hour during Alaska’s peak construction this season.
McCarthy: “This is actually the most significant year we’ve had in DOT history for construction, both in terms of the number of projects and the volume of contract payments so it’s a pretty significant year.”
