Two teenagers were hospitalized with serious injuries on Monday after the all-terrain vehicle they were riding collided with an SUV in Sterling.
According to the Department of Public Safety dispatch on the incident, shortly before 4:00 p.m. on Monday, the two teens were riding a Yahama four-wheeler at the intersection of Robinson Loop Road and Valley View Road when they failed to stop at a stop sign. The driver of the ATV attempted to cross Robinson Loop Road and crashed into the side of a black Toyota FJ.
ATVs are allowed to drive on roadways in Alaska after new ATV-related regulations went into effect on Jan. 1, 2022. Under the new regulations, ATVs are permitted on public roads that have a posted speed limit of 45 mph or less.
The dispatch states that both teens involved in Monday’s collision had to be transported to the hospital with “serious injuries.”
The driver of the Toyota SUV only suffered minor injuries.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
