Soldotna Alaska State Troopers received a report of a two-vehicle collision at mile 85.5 of the Sterling Highway in Sterling. The incident happened on Tuesday at 11:23 a.m. involving a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt passenger car and a 2008 Toyota Tacoma pickup. The caller reported a female, and two young children were entrapped in the Cobalt passenger car, according to the online trooper dispatch.
Central Emergency Services from Soldotna and Sterling responded along with State Troopers. The female driver and both children were transported via ambulance to a local medical facility. Both children had been in the rear seat and were in car seats. The male driver that was operating the Toyota Tacoma was also transported via CES ambulance to a local hospital for treatment for minor injuries.
Scene investigation and witness statements revealed the Tacoma was heading northbound driving below the posted speed limit on the icy roadway when the southbound Cobalt began fishtailing and crossed into the opposite lane of travel.
The driver of the Tacoma attempted to veer right to avoid the collision but struck the Cobalt on the passenger side with the front driver’s side of his pickup. The female driver and one of the children, later being identified as 10-months-old, were flown from Central Peninsula Hospital and later life-flighted to Providence Alaska Medical Center. According to their family, both are on life support.
The investigation by the Alaska State Troopers is ongoing. No other details, including names, are known at this time.
Due to the high expected cost of the medical expenses, members of the family shared with KSRM a link to the GoFundMe account, hoping to raise at least $5,000. The link can be found here.
