Homer Electric Association is asking members if they agree with shifting controlling powers from the state’s Regulatory Commission of Alaska to HEA’s local nine-member board.
Board Member Dick Waisanen spoke with KSRM’s Merrill Sikorski about the special election.
Waisanen: “The board voted unanimously to support this issue of local control. We have people on the board who are from all walks of life and from all areas of the Peninsula. It is something that’s going to help save the cooperative money.”
HEA says the measure will save money by reducing operational and administrative costs for our members because the cooperative will no longer have to report to the RCA.
Waisanen said the special election ballots were mailed out last month.
Waisanen: “The election for the HEA question about when we go self-regulated or not, the ballots go out at the same time that a person gets their bill. So throughout the month of October there’s actually six billing dates that they send out the bills so on those dates they should send out the ballot, so you should get your ballot in a separate envelope about the same time that you get your bill. On your ballot it will state when your ballot is due.”
The last day that HEA will accept ballots is November 28, you can contact the local office if you did not receive a ballot.
