The Chugach National Forest and Alaska Department of Transportation are working on and around the Portage Curve on the Seward Highway. DOT crews are in Phase II of the Seward Highway Project and the Chugach National Forest is implementing the Portage Curve Multimodal Connector Project. Improvements to the area include new bridges, pathways, and upgraded and expanded parking areas.

The Chugach National Forest says:

“We recognize that construction affects current use of the facilities, but the short-term inconvenience will result in a much-improved experience for everyone. These updates should help you plan ahead as you recreate on the Chugach National Forest.”

The Twenty Mile River boat launch (MP S80.7 or A46.3) and parking area will remain open throughout the project. Congestion is anticipated.
During construction season 2023, Alaska DOT flaggers will help with traffic control in and out of the Twenty Mile River access site as this area is improved.
The Placer Proper boat launch (MP S78.4 or A48.6) and parking area will be closed for the duration of the project.
The Placer Overflow boat launch (MP S77.9.4 or A49.1) and parking area will be fully accessible to the public starting June 22, 2022 and will remain open for the duration of the project.
