Upper Cook Inlet Commercial (UCI) Fishing Announcement No. 43 opens commercial salmon fishing with set gillnets in the Kalgin Island Subdistrict of Upper Cook Inlet on Saturday, August 14, 2021, from 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m.
The sustainable escapement goal (SEG) for Packer’s Creek sockeye salmon is 15,000–30,000 fish. A video weir assessment of sockeye salmon escapement into Packers Lake projects the SEG will be achieved. According to 5 AAC 21.370 Packers Creek Sockeye Salmon Management Plan, for the purpose of harvesting Packers Creek sockeye salmon, extra fishing time in the Kalgin Island Subdistrict shall be limited to no more than one additional fishing period per week. This announcement is in compliance with the Packers Creek Sockeye Salmon Management Plan.
Reminders:
Regulatory drift gillnet fishing periods in Drift Gillnet Area 3 and 4 of the Central District will continue on Mondays and Thursdays 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. for the remainder of the UCI salmon fishing season, until closed or changed by emergency order.
Chinitna Bay Subdistrict is currently not open to drift gillnetting unless an emergency order specifies those waters are open.
Set gillnet fishing periods in the Northern District, and the Chinitna Bay, Western, Kalgin Island, and Kustatan Subdistricts of the Central District, will continue the regulatory open fishing periods on Mondays and Thursdays 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., until closed or changed by emergency order. No further set gillnet fishing periods in the Upper Subdistrict of the Central District are anticipated in 2021, and the season will officially close after August 15.
