Military veterans from around the state will fish the Kenai River this weekend in the annual Wounded Heroes event.

Dave Goggia with the Kenai River Foundation said the event brings vets from the wounded transition unit as well as active military members.

Goggia: “This year we’ve branched out and have invited all branches so we’re bringing 80 down from all branches of the military this year.”

Those veterans are provided two days of fishing, a night of lodging, all meals, and door prizes donated by local Kenai River Guides and the local community.

The event is volunteer based and all funds raised go to covering the costs of the event Goggia said.

Goggia: “There will probably be up to 40 different guides that will volunteer their time and boats and gas and all their gear.”

This year’s Wounded Heroes begins this Friday, August 7.

Goggia said anyone interested in volunteering or contributing to the event can contact him on his cell phone at 252-3503 or through the Kenai River Foundation’s website.

Over the last nine years the event has fished with over 725 wounded heroes and their support staff.
