Volunteers From Alaska Deploy To Assist Major Wildfires In California

Eight Red Cross volunteers are gearing up to deploy to Sacramento to assist with several wildfires burning across California. They are joining together to form a sheltering team at the request of the Red Cross. The volunteers that are being deployed come from Anchorage, Wasilla, Fairbanks, Two Rivers, Skagway, Ketchikan, and Juneau. According to a press report, they will be arriving in Sacramento and travel as a team to help the various sheltering operations across the Golden State.

 

Kelin Hickey, Disaster Workforce Engagement Director with the American Red Cross of Alaska said:

“We are incredibly honored that national headquarters reached out to Alaska to form this special sheltering team. Our volunteers are ready, willing, and able to help other regions as they deal with these devastating natural disasters.”

 

The American Red Cross is working to help people impacted by the McKinney Wildfire in California. Crewmembers and volunteers are helping provide shelters, including food to eat and emotional support during this time.

 

The McKinney Fire — north of Sacramento near the Oregon border — has burned more than 60,000 acres in Siskiyou County in just a few days and is 99% contained. Thousands of people have been forced to leave their homes, and more than 100 structures have burned.
