Voter Registration Deadline Is Approaching For Fall Elections

Anyone who wants to vote in the upcoming elections in Alaska has only a slim window of time left to register. The voter registration deadline for fall elections is Sept. 1.

Alaska is one of 28 states that does not allow same-day voter registrations, meaning anyone who has not registered to vote on or before the Sept. 1 deadline will not be eligible to vote in the upcoming municipal, borough, and federal elections.

The remaining 22 states and Washington, D.C., have implemented same-day registration, which allows any qualified resident of the state to register to vote and cast a ballot at the same time. Twenty of those states and Washington, D.C., offer Election Day registration, which means voters can both register and vote on Election Day, often during the early voting period.

To register to vote, visit the Alaska Online Voter Registration Website provided by the Division of Elections.

If you are unsure of your voter status, you can easily double-check your eligibility using the Division’s Voter Portal.

Although there is a repeal measure on the ballot this fall for Ranked Choice Voting, the preference-based system will be utilized in Alaska in this year’s state elections. Under the Ranked Choice system, only the top four candidates who received the greatest number of votes for any office in the primary will appear on the general election ballot. There will still be a space for write-in candidates except for Presidential races. For a candidate to win, they must receive a majority (50% + 1) of total votes cast. If no candidate receives a majority of 1st choice votes in the 1st round of counting, more rounds of counting continue until a candidate reaches a majority.

Municipal and Borough elections will be held on Oct. 1, 2024.

Federal election day this year is Nov. 4.
