Voters Hit Polls For Municipal Election Day Across Kenai Peninsula

Today is Municipal Election Day across the Kenai Peninsula. Voters will take to the polls to vote for the races that affect them at the local level. Kenai Peninsula Borough Clerk Johni Blankenship states that polls open at 7:00 a.m. and close at 8:00 p.m. today with certification of the results targeted for a week from today, Tuesday, October 11. There are several races and bond propositions that are on this year’s ballot.

 

The Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly will have three races to be decided today. They include District 3 – Nikiski as incumbent Jesse Bjorkman is running for reelection. He is challenged by Chase Griffith and Dil Uhlin. District 4 – Soldotna has incumbent Tyson Cox running for reelection while Donald Boston challenges. District 7 – Central has Brent Johnson running unopposed for reelection.

 

There are two races for the City of Kenai. In the mayoral race, incumbent Brian Gabriel is seeking reelection while his challenger Teea Winger is looking to unseat him. In the city council race, there are two council vacancies with three challenging. Incumbent Glenese Pettey is running for reelection against challengers Victoria Askin and Alex Douthit.

 

Additionally, there are two council races for the City of Soldotna. Incumbent Dave Carey is running for reelection in Seat D against challenger Erick Hugarte and incumbent Lisa Parker is running for reelection in Seat E while Garrett Dominick is looking to unseat her. Also on the ballot in Soldotna is the proposition regarding the field house construction at the Soldotna Regional Sports Complex.

 

Voters boroughwide will decide two ballot propositions – one determines educational capital improvement general obligation bonds and the other decides apportionment of the Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly and the Board of Education. Voters also will decide a proposition on the CES Station #1 bond and approval project (note: this is to be decided by all Central Emergency Service Area voters).

 

The Kenai Peninsula Board of Education also has three races that will be decided at the polls today. They include District 1 – Kalifornsky as incumbent Patricia Truesdell is being challenged by Virgil Lee Gattenby. In District 6 – East Peninsula, Virginia Morgan is running for reelection against challenger Ryan Culbertson. In District 9 – South Peninsula, John ‘Zen’ Kelly is running for reelection unopposed.

 

The other contested race across the borough decides Seat B on the North Peninsula Recreation Service Area Board as Clayton Cason is running against Alexa McClure.

 

Other uncontested races boroughwide include service area board seats in the Bear Creek Fire Service Area, Central Emergency Service Area/Central Peninsula Emergency Medical Service Area, Nikiski Senior Service Area Board, North Peninsula Recreation Service Area Board (Seat A), Seward-Bear Creek Flood Service Area Board, and South Kenai Peninsula Hospital Service Area Board.
