Walker Promises to Veto Anchorage LIO Purchase

Governor Bill Walker has promised to veto the purchase of the Anchorage legislative office building if the item remains in the state capital budget.

 

He says with Alaska facing a $3.5 billion budget deficit right now the purchase does not make sense.

 

Walker says he wanted to let legislators know where he stands on the issue as legislators continue to work to put the budget together.

 

The version of the capital budget passed by the Senate includes $32.5 million for the building and land purchase of the legislative office building in downtown Anchorage.

 

The purchase is meant to save money since the state is currently in a $40 million, 10-year lease. The building owner has accepted the offer, pending legislative approval.
