The Kenai Peninsula Borough has lifted all weight restrictions on borough roads.

Pat Malone with the Borough Road Service Department said some roads towards Homer are still losing their permafrost.

Malone: “Normally we follow kind of the DOT but they went ahead of us a little bit and we held ours back a couple more weeks to make sure that some of the roads, like I said mostly depends on the southern peninsula are still healing up from breakup.”

He said that weight restrictions are regulated in order to not damage roads that are too soft for heavy loads.

Malone: “Well anybody that’s planning on hiring a contractor probably needs to know that prior to the lifting of the restrictions they were at 50% of the actual load for gravel roads and now they’re at regular summer time which is basically at no restrictions.”
