When a relationship goes south, who gets the pets? The state may soon be given the authority to decide under a bill introduced by Rep. Liz Vasquez.
Vasquez’ bill defines pets as marital property and the courts would get to assign pet custody, with consideration of what would be best for the animal. It would cover all vertebrates, but not include fish.
The bill has already garnered bipartisan co-sponsorships.
There are also provisions in the bill that would apply in domestic violence cases, allowing a victim to file a legal petition for pet custody and/or prevent the abuser from disposing of the pet.
