A new wildfire on the Kenai Peninsula in the area of MP 102 of the Sterling Highway, near TJ Seggy’s, prompted a rapid multi-agency response Friday afternoon, with roughly 25 firefighters and air support actively fighting to contain the blaze.

According to Central Emergency Services Chief Roy Browning, the fire—estimated at around 10 acres—is burning actively with crews working both the left and right flanks. One air tanker and one helicopter were dispatched to assist ground efforts, and more air support was en route as of early afternoon.

The Alaska Interagency Coordination Center listed the fire as “active” and “uncontained” as of Friday afternoon. The blaze originated on private land, with the cause still undetermined. The state Division of Forestry’s Kenai-Kodiak Area office is the lead protection agency on the scene, working alongside CES crews.

The fire was first reported earlier in the day, and authorities say response efforts are focused on containment and keeping the fire from spreading in dry conditions.

No evacuations had been announced as of press time, but officials urge residents to stay alert and avoid the area to allow crews to work safely.
