Winds, Wet Weather Cause Avalanche Conditions

The National Weather Service has issued an avalanche warning for the mountains of Hatcher Pass into Wednesday afternoon after a large avalanche closed Hatcher Pass Road this morning.

 

This weekend’s strong winds combined with last week’s snow accumulation have created unstable snow conditions in Turnagain Pass also, according to a Sunday report on the Chugach National Forest’s Avalanche Information website.

 

Adding heavy mixed precipitation will likely cause more human caused and natural avalanches.

Carter: “In Turnagain Pass the best thing that [riders] can do is get information before they head into the backcountry and so looking for the forecast going to the Chugach National Forest Service Avalanche Information Center site will give them the information as far as community observations and snow pack and weather information.”

Several human caused avalanches were caused in Turnagain Pass over the weekend.

 

As of Tuesday afternoon in Hatcher Pass, Alaska State Troopers continue to search for a backcountry skier who was last reported to be in the area on Sunday.
