The National Weather Service has issued a special weather statement notifying southcentral Alaskans that two weather fronts may bring snow and possibly rain through Thursday.
The first storm is set to begin this evening in the Cook Inlet region according to Forecaster Royce Fontenot with the National Weather Service.
Fontenot: “First one’s going to start spreading through tonight, snowfall’s going to be relatively light, below an advisory level. We’ve got this warm air pushing ahead of the front so there’s a possibility as this front comes through we’re going to have a rain/snow changeover, we’re not as much looking at freezing rain as the fact that we’re looking at the surface still being cold.”
He says the cold ground temperatures from the recent frozen spell will make sidewalks and side roads very slick and the mix creating the slick conditions may last through Friday morning.
Fontenot: “And then as this next front comes through, we’re looking at coming into Friday, we’re initially going to start as a rain snow mix on the Kenai and then by Friday night as that low track moves to the east we should go more northwesterly and turn over to all snow by Friday night.”
The National Weather Service is forecasting snow showers for the Kenai Peninsula through the weekend.
