The National Weather Service in Anchorage has issued a winter weather advisory for Western Prince William Sound, including the cities of Whittier, Turnagain Pass, and Moose Pass, predicting snow accumulations of 6 to 24 inches, and winds as high as 45 mph.

This advisory is in effect from 9:00 p.m. tonight to 3:00 a.m. Sunday.

According to the NWS warning, heavy snow with snow rates in excess of 1 inch/hour is expected. Warming temperatures may result in a transition to rain Saturday night and Sunday for Whittier. Visibility will be reduced to one quarter mile at times due to blizzard-like conditions.

Conditions will improve Saturday afternoon before worsening again with another around of precipitation Saturday night. Rain or a rain/snow mix is likely for Whittier. Turnagain Pass and areas south along the Seward highway will again see heavy snow and an increase in wind. This will result in reduced visibility and slick conditions on untreated surfaces.

Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the commute. Slow down and use caution while traveling.

If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
