Alyeska Resort in Girdwood is planning its opening day for Thanksgiving, November 26, thanks to recent snow accumulation.
Last year the opening day was delayed because of lack of snow but currently the mountain has three times as much snow as this time last year.
The early Monday winter storm grew Alyeska’s mountain-top base layer to 22 inches while the bottom received four new inches of snow.
Downhill enthusiasts have also been enjoying the backcountry powder that blanketed Turnagain Pass this weekend.
The U.S. Forest Service is encouraging backcountry travelers to be careful however, as there were two human-caused avalanches reported in the Chugach National Forest over the weekend.
No serious injuries were reported.
