Younger Seavey Takes Third Iditarod

Pulling smoothly into Nome, Dallas Seavey has claimed his third Iditarod victory in just four years. He finished at 4:13:06 this morning (Wednesday) with lead dogs Reef and Hero. This is Reef’s second year as a rose garland winnter.

 

Father Mitch Seavey is in second position, leaving White Mountain at 10:21pm Tuesday evening.

 

Seavey Jr had been suspicious about his 4-hour lead in White Mountain, remembering last year’s climactic finish…

Seavey: “I saw a headlight behind me and I thought it was my dad, and I crossed the finish line and I thought, ‘Well, I got third, I can be proud of that.’ It took me about a minute after being here to realize I won the Iditarod.”

 

Driving through a blowing snow, Seavey had no idea he’d won the Great Race in 2014 until several minutes after passing under the burled arch. His run this year totaled 8d 18h 13m 6s, close to 5 hours longer than last year, which was the fastest run in Iditarod history.

 

It’s been a Seavey-streak since 2012, with the elder Seavey mushing to victory in 2013. This year’s prize was $70,000 and a new truck.
