Although it is still a little early, the early king run is looking stronger than it was last year according to the Department of Fish and Game.
The early run king salmon numbers show that this year is on track with 2010 when numbers hit right in the 5,300-9,000 escapement goal for early run kings.
Currently all king fishing on the Kenai River is closed.
Sport fisheries biologist Robert Begich detailed the current Kenai River king salmon emergency order closure.
Begich: “What we’re looking at now, so the emergency order is written to close the early run king salmon sport fishing in the entire river through June 30 and then the second piece of that is that it would be closed through July 31 upstream of Slicok creek king salmon sanctuary so during July the only part that’s going to be open is the lower 18 miles downstream of Slicok creek, that’s the way things stand right now.”
