The Kenai Peninsula School District and the Alaska Department of Transportation partnered to host the 3rd annual Alaska Construction Career Day at the Soldotna Sports Center.

Norma Lucero with the Department of Transportation spoke about the aim of the event.

Lucero: “The purpose of the event is to expose our youth into the construction trades to support our transportation infrastructure in the State of Alaska. We know that college is not for everyone so what we try to do is think outside the box by not creating the typical job fair experience and what we want to do with this event is give the students that opportunity to explore the trades.”

Soldotna High School junior Austin Hatten has attended the event for the past three years.

Hatten: “I just like seeing a lot of the new stuff that’s here, sometimes there are new vendors that come and display what different professions there is in carpentry, truck driving, welding, mechanical stuff.”

Hatten said he plans to study to receive his CDL after high school.

Loretta Spalding with the School District said the event is continuing to grow.

Spalding: “I think it’s getting more and more students every year as the word gets out, what a fun day it is and how they get to talk to trades people, young apprentices come down that are actually working in the field and talk to the students and it’s just a really fun day.”
