At the 24th Annual Caring For The Kenai presentations, Katherine Dolma of Homer High School was awarded $1,600 for her green roofs idea.

Dolma told us what inspired her project “Up On the Rooftops” which focused on using the normally unused spaces of school roofs for growing plants.

Dolma: “This has been an issue that has been really interesting to me since probably middle school, I’ve been part of a lot of environmental groups and I think it’s a really amazing opportunity for a space that is not normally utilized.”

She said that she has already sent emails to multiple Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly Members and District Superintendent Dr. Steve Atwater about possibly including a test project in this summer’s re-roofing processes.

We asked her if she expected to win this year’s Caring for the Kenai.

Dolma: “I had no idea, I’m absolutely stunned. There are so many incredible projects here tonight I didn’t even think I was going to make the top 6.”

As we previously reported, Dolma was also named one of Alaska’s top two youth volunteers for the 2014 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards earlier this year.
