Common Theme of Cannabis Meeting: Education

Last night the Kenai Community Coalition on Cannabis hosted around 120 people interested in the implementation of legalized marijuana…

“I was curious what the community’s attitude was about cannabis. I’m really opposed to it, and I thought, ‘Obviously, not everybody’s of the same mindset I am,’ so mine was basically just to gather information about it.

“Being in the healthcare field, I’ve seen a lot of damage by pharmaceutical drugs, and so I highly support education and further use, research, using it medicinally.

“We’re not supposed to hate people because they have a different opinion than us, we’re just supposed to respect it, go on about our business and try in the future to convince them that maybe they’re wrong.”

Many municipal, state, and business representatives also attended the meeting like Rep. Mike Chenault, Sen. Peter Micciche, and Borough Mayor Mike Navarre.

KPB Mayor Navarre: “Really, this is a very good way of educating the public and the community about the issue and I think that’s critically important and it can help drive policy. At the Borough, we’re trying to figure out exactly what role we’re going to play and how we go about doing it. The effort towards education is absolutely, I think, the key to good policy.”

The meeting was organized by local attorney Eric Derleth and Marc Theiler of the Kenai Community Coalition on Cannabis who said they were immensely pleased with the community interest in getting more information on the topic.
