DOT Winter 2023-24 “Name The Snowplow” Contest Is Open For Nominations

Alaskans will name the newest snowplow in the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) equipment fleet. DOT&PF is now accepting “Name a Snowplow” nominations for the winter season of 2023-24.

“This is a community powered initiative,” said DOT&PF Commissioner Ryan Anderson. “We hear from the public that they appreciate our winter plow truck operators, and this is a great way for them to engage with our team. This also helps us spread the word on how important these vehicles are to keeping our important highway connections open and ready for Alaskans to get around safely.”

“We are already getting great suggestions via the comment sections in social media,” said DOT&PF Contest Coordinator Danielle Tessen. “The contest allows Alaskans to showcase their creativity and winter spirit by suggesting the perfect names for the department’s winter snowplows. We’re asking the public to make it official by submitting suggestions to the contest website at dot.alaska.gov/nameasnowplow.”

Submission Guidelines:

  • Submissions are limited to no more than 30 characters (including letters and spaces).
  • Keep it classy, Alaska. Any submissions that include profanity or other inappropriate language will not be considered.
  • Politically inspired names (including phrases, slogans or plays on politicians’ names) will not be considered. Naming snowplows is meant to be fun and lighthearted, so we’re going to keep this contest nonpartisan and nonpolitical.

The final voting will be at this year’s first Alaska Snow Summit, where DOT commitment to community engagement and winter preparedness will be the focus. Snow Summit attendees, in-person and virtual, will have the opportunity to vote for the top choices from the snowplow names.

“The event is a celebration of Alaskan resilience and the spirit that keeps our roads safe during the most challenging seasons,” said Central Region Maintenance & Operations Chief Kirk Warren.
