The Annual Kenai Kite Festival soared into an afternoon of summer fun on Saturday, May 31, drawing hundreds to Millennium Square Park. With clear skies, strong winds, and sunshine, colorful kites of all different shapes and sizes decorated the sky.
Since its debut at Kenai North Beach in 2019, the festival has become a cherished local tradition, bringing families and neighbors together each year for a day of creativity, community, and open-air enjoyment.
A highlight of this year’s event was a kite demonstration by AlasKiters, a group of expert flyers from across Alaska who showcased both their skills and a collection of giant, elaborate kites.
“They seem like this is a hobby they love more than anything,” said Kenai Parks and Recreation Director Tyler Best. “They just like to get out, fly kites, and be outside, which pairs perfectly with living in Alaska and Parks and Rec.”
The festival featured more than kites: families enjoyed field games, frozen treats, music, a Build-A-Kite station, a bubble zone, and various local food trucks.
Thanks to community support from volunteers and sponsors, including AlasKiters, The Salvation Army, Main Street Tap & Grill, Kenai Walmart, and Kenai Safeway, the day was made possible.
As the summer season begins, Kenai Peninsula communities prepare for various upcoming events, including the Wednesday Markets in Soldotna, Homer’s HarborFest, next month’s 4th of July Parade in Kenai, and Soldotna’s Progress Days.
Reflecting on the event and the season ahead, Best added, “I think it’s really a great community that’s making Kenai great—and a great place to live.”
