Last week President Barack Obama proclaimed May 12-16 National Small Business week.

We spoke with Kenda Blanning, who recently opened Orange Poppy in Soldotna, about what role small businesses have in communities.

Blanning: “I’m hoping ya know, after opening this that Soldotna becomes more of a community that gives the feel of just coming in and shopping local and just making it feel like a small town that has a lot to offer.”

Blanning said since her opening in April the response from the community has been overwhelmingly welcoming.

According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, Alaska has 16,184 small businesses which employ 55.6% of the private sector.
