Upcoming Kenai Peninsula Community Discussions On Homeless

The Kenai Peninsula Homelessness Coalition has scheduled several virtual discussions about housing and homelessness on the Kenai Peninsula and want the public to participate in the planning process.

 

Kathy Gensel told the Soldotna City Council:

“We are almost to the end of our strategic plan. we are now at the part where we want to ask the communities to join us. This week, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, we will be having community discussions, all virtual via Zoom. Monday will be the Southern Peninsula area. Tuesday is the Central Area, Kenai Soldotna, Sterling, Cooper Landing areas. Wednesday will be the Eastern area. Thursday will cover the whole Borough. If you can’t make it to the one on Tuesday, you’re more than welcome to join the other ones. You can register at www.kenaipeninsulahomeless.org and they’ll send you the Zoom invite for that, but we’re to the point now where we want the community’s input and feedback. We will be showing the draft strategic plan at that time and some other exciting things that are going on. We encourage all of you to send it out email groups that you have, church groups, social groups and whatever you’ve got. We want to have plenty of community discussion.”

According to Project Homeless Connect’s Final Report for the Kenai Peninsula in 2019, it’s estimated that the number of Kenai Peninsula homeless totaled nearly 900 people with the top primary reason for homelessness listed as other, which can be summarized as landlord issues, current housing problems, loss of benefits, lost home to fire, no work, home not habitable, death in family, property taxes, lack of funds, asked to move out, can’t find work, and/or natural disaster.
