Blowing winds and high tides closed off access to the Homer Spit over the weekend. The stronger winds brought big waves, which blew debris across Homer Spit Road, causing the Alaska Department of Transportation to close the road while crews used a grader to push the rocks and debris off the road.

A social media post from the Homer Police Department on Monday stated, “Best to avoid the spit for a while. High tide at 3:05 with some hellacious wind. Your insurance companies will thank you.”

Homer Police states that the Spit was closed, not necessarily because of the weather, but because of the residents driving on the road keeping the road graders from plowing the rocks out of the road.
