Football Championship Pairings Set Following Blow-Out Weekend In Playoff Games

Not only did all four #1 seeds record victories in first-round playoff games in Division II and Division III high school football, but each higher seeded team won in blowout fashion.

 

The Division II championship game will feature Northern Lights Conference Soldotna High School, winners of seven-straight D-II championships, facing Railbelt #1 Lathrop of Fairbanks.

The Division II title game is scheduled for Saturday, October 19th at 4 p.m. at the Anchorage Football Stadium.

 

The Division III championship games will pair Peninsula Conference champion Houston High School, undefeated (9-0) on the season, against Aurora Conference champion Barrow, 2017 D-III state champion.  The Division III title game is scheduled for Saturday, October 19th at noon at the Anchorage Football Stadium.

 

First-Round Playoff Game Results

Division III: Barrow 52 – Nikiski 0

The Barrow Whalers will return to the Division III championship on the strength of a 52-0 shut out of the Nikiski Bulldogs.  Barrow lead 14-0 after one quarter, 28-0 at the half and 52-0 at the final horn.  The Whalers will face Houston in the Division III title game on October 19th.

Division III: Houston 64 – Eielson 21

The Houston Hawks extend their unbeaten season to a Division III state championship game, just the second in school history, following a 64-21 dismantling of perennial powerhouse Eielson.   Eielson opened the scoring; however, Houston lead by 13 at the half.  The Hawks scored five, second half touchdowns while allow a single Raven score.

Houston will battle Barrow on Saturday, October 19th at the Anchorage Football Stadium in the Division III championship game scheduled for noon.

 

First-Round Playoff Game Results

Division II: Lathrop 54 – Eagle River 10

The Lathrop Malemutes with a 54-10 victory over Eagle River advance to their first Division II state championship games since being reclassified from Division I in 2018.  The Malemutes will travel to Anchorage to battle the Soldotna Stars on Saturday at the Anchorage Football Stadium.  Game scheduled for 4 p.m.  Lathrop and SoHi played September 13 with the Stars dominating Lathrop 51-14.

Division II: SoHi 54 – West Valley 22

SoHi advances to contend for an eighth-straight Division II (Medium School) football state championship.  SoHi vs Lathrop will be played on Saturday, October 19th at 4 p.m. at the Anchorage Football Stadium.  SoHi-West Valley game results available on sports page.

 

Division I First Round Results

Colony 28 – East 27

The Colony Knights upset #1 seed and 2018 Division I state champion East 28-27 with the Knights denying an East 2-point conversion in the final minute.

West 42 – Bartlett 6

The West Eagles, #2 seed from the Cook Inlet Conference, defeated Bartlett 42-6 on Friday.  The Eagles advance to the semi-finals; West has played in the Division I championship game for six consecutive years, dating back to 2013, winning the championship in 2013 and 2015.
