Peninsula Athletes Post Notable Finishes In State-Wide Races

The 2022 Homer Spit Run and the 2022 North Pole Triathlon filled the competition schedule in the final weekend of June (along with the previously reported Alaska Relay), with races in Alaska’s interior and at the end of the road in Homer.

 

2022 Homer Spit Run

The Homer Spit run featured both 10K and half-marathon events held on Saturday, June 25th in Homer, Alaska.

The events began at Homer High School and concluded at the End of the Road Park on the Homer Spit.

The 10K Men’s event was on by Evan Markelz, age 16, of Mountain View, California in a time of 33:56..  The Women’s 10K was won by Amanda Cherok of Homer finishing in 43:21.

The half-marathon event in the women’s division was won by Aleah Mickelson of Yakima, Washington, with a time of 1:34:11. The Men’s fastest time was posted by Timothy Johnson at 1:36.26.

 

North Pole Triathlon

The North Pole Triathlon was contested at the Chena Lakes Recreation Area on Saturday with the top finishes recorded by Central Peninsula athletes.

Morgan Aldridge, of Sterling, topped the women’s field with a composite time of 2 hours, 14 minutes and 43 seconds.   Kenai’s Jon Iannaccone was the fastest male competitor posting a time of 2:07:07

The race included three legs: a 1,500 meter swim in open water, a 13-mile bike segment on the park trails, and a 6-mile run in the Chena Lake Recreation Area.
