Stars Ride Dominant Pitching To Win Over Kardinals

Soldotna 8, Kenai 0

Soldotna Stars pitcher Trenton Ohnemus followed up a great performance over the weekend against the Palmer Moose with an absolute gem on Tuesday night. Ohnemus carried a no-hitter all the way to the last out of the game but had it spoiled by Kardinals’ Gabe Smith, who legged out an infield single with two outs in the top of the seventh inning.

The hit was the only blemish on an otherwise sensational outing by the Stars’ top pitcher, who earned the win, pitched a complete seven innings, allowed no runs, struck out seven, and walked two batters. Soldotna set down the first 17 Kardinal batters.

Offensively, the bats came to life for Soldotna. Wyatt Gagnon led the way, 2-3 at the plate, with three RBIs, two runs scored, and a no-doubt 2-run home run in the third inning. Levi Mickelson added another two RBIs in a 2-4 showing on the night. Matthew Schilling, who singled and doubled in the game and stole four bases, reached base all four times he came to the plate. He also scored two runs.

Kenai’s starting pitcher, Everett Chamberlain, pitched three innings and allowed four earned runs on four hits. He was relieved by Gabe Joanis, who allowed four runs, two earned, in two and third innings pitched. Jackson Marion finished the night for Kenai, throwing two-thirds of an inning, and was the only Kenai pitcher to hold the Stars hitless.

Soldotna Player of the Game: Wyatt Gagnon.

Kenai Player of the Game: Jackson Marion.
