Homer Outlasts Nikiski In DIII Football Shootout

The Homer Mariners rallied for a 46-36 Division III football road victory over the Nikiski Bulldogs; Homer improves to 6-1 on the season and the Nikiski Bulldogs return to varsity play after three weeks of schedule changes.

 

Homer 46 – Nikiski 36

The Bulldogs took little time to knock-off the rust, playing in the varsity’s first DIII game since a week three victory over Eielson.

Nikiski opened with a first quarter touchdown for an 8-0 lead and following a fumble recovery by the Bulldogs, Nikiski added a second quarter touchdown for a 14-0 second quarter lead.  The Mariner’s offense scored with under three minutes remaining in the first half to draw to 14-8.  Nikiski answered with a touchdown with only :02 seconds remaining.  Homer, again answers, scoring on a kick return with no time remaining in the half to trail the Bulldogs 20-16.

The second half opened with the Mariners taking the lead at 24-20 on the first play of the half.  Nikiski drove to the Homer 4-yard line but was turned away.  Homer drove for a score and a 32-20 advantage.  Dwyght Mullins recorded a pick-six with an interception in the fourth quarter to bring the Bulldogs to with a score at 32-28.  Homer extended their lead to 38-28 and on the ensuing kick-off,  Nikiski fumbled and the Mariners scored just one play later for a 46-28 Homer lead.  Nikiski powered-in one final touchdown in the game’s final minute.  Final Score: Homer 46 – Nikiski 36.

Upcoming Schedule

Nikiski closes the regular season with a Denali Conference showdown against the Seward Seahawks on Friday, September 30th at Nikiski High School.

The winner of the Nikiski vs Seward football game will represent the Denali Conference in the Division III football playoffs.
