Local Man’s Battle with Cancer Prompts Interest in Alternative Treatments

After Soldotna Spenard Builder’s Supply general manager Rick Abbott was diagnosed with cancer in 2011 and doctors told him there weren’t many options, he explored alternative treatments, which led him to Mexico.

Abbott is now considered doing “very well” and said that after sharing his story with other peninsula residents and communicating the local interest with the hospital, one of the doctors who helped with his treatments in Mexico,  Rodrigo Rodriguez, is travelling to Alaska.

Abbott: “He’ll be here on Tuesday the 17th at the Challenger Learning Center, registration is at 6 o’clock, he’ll speak at 6:30 for about an hour, hour and a half and after that he’ll be there and he said he’ll stay as long as need be until all questions are answered.”

This is a free event and Rodrigo Rodriguez is with the International BioCare Hospital and Wellness Center.

Abbott told us that his wife Phoebe heard about the hospital through a friend after his initial diagnosis from doctors.

Abbott: “Didn’t have very good results from them and they said they could give me some chemo for pain and that was about it and so as a result we prayed about it and Phoebe was fortunately able to get some information about the International Biocare Hospital in Tijuana.”

We asked what the hospital was like.

Abbott: “The people are so kind, there’s a warmth about the doctors, the folks who are there, we learned  more about our bodies because other people had been dealing with their conditions for years, I’d only found out about my condition just a few short months prior and some had been from Canada, some from the other side of the states many different faiths, but so much knowledge and you’re all there for a reason, pretty much the same reason, to get better.”
